The Bhagavad Gita on fear
The whole Gita is spoken on a battlefield, to someone afraid of what is about to happen. Arjuna's fear is not mocked; it is met with patience, friendship and a wider view.
The teachings that follow offer several ways to hold fear: by returning to what is in our control, by remembering what is lasting in us, and by taking small steps anyway.
How the Gita approaches this
Fear often lives in the future. The Gita repeatedly brings attention back to present action, reminds us that feelings come and go like seasons, and names fearlessness (abhayam) as the very first of the noble qualities.
Verses to reflect on
Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 2, Verse 3
klaibyaṁ mā sma gamaḥ pārtha naitat tvayy upapadyate
kṣudraṁ hṛdaya-daurbalyaṁ tyaktvottiṣṭha paran-tapa
Translation
Do not yield to this weakness, Arjuna; it does not suit you. Cast off this small faintness of heart and rise, O scorcher of foes.
In simple words Interpretation
You are stronger than this moment is telling you. When you're ready, you can rise.
When this may help: When you need courage, or when self-doubt is telling you a smaller story about yourself than is true.
A question to sit with: What would you do today if you trusted your own strength a little more?
Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 2, Verse 40
nehābhikrama-nāśo 'sti pratyavāyo na vidyate
sv-alpam apy asya dharmasya trāyate mahato bhayāt
Translation
On this path, no effort is ever lost and no harm is done. Even a little of this practice protects one from great fear.
In simple words Interpretation
No sincere effort is wasted. Even a small step counts.
When this may help: When you feel your efforts have been pointless, or you're afraid to start because you can't do it perfectly.
A question to sit with: What small step could you take today that would still count, even if no one saw it?
Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 16, Verse 1
abhayaṁ sattva-saṁśuddhir jñāna-yoga-vyavasthitiḥ
dānaṁ damaś ca yajñaś ca svādhyāyas tapa ārjavam
Translation
Fearlessness, purity of heart, steadfastness in knowledge and practice, generosity, self-restraint, sacrifice, study, discipline and straightforwardness —
In simple words Interpretation
The first quality the Gita lists in a noble nature is fearlessness. Courage is the ground other virtues grow from.
When this may help: When you need courage to be honest, generous or true to yourself.
A question to sit with: What would you do differently if you were just a little less afraid?
Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 9, Verse 22
ananyāś cintayanto māṁ ye janāḥ paryupāsate
teṣāṁ nityābhiyuktānāṁ yoga-kṣemaṁ vahāmy aham
Translation
To those who remember me with undivided attention and are always devoted, I bring what they lack and preserve what they have.
In simple words Interpretation
You don't have to carry everything alone. In the Gita's vision, those who turn toward the Divine are cared for.
When this may help: When worry about the future feels heavy and you long to trust that you'll be looked after.
A question to sit with: What would you set down today if you trusted you'd be cared for?
Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 2, Verse 14
mātrā-sparśās tu kaunteya śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ
āgamāpāyino 'nityās tāṁs titikṣasva bhārata
Translation
Contact with the world brings cold and heat, pleasure and pain. These come and go; they are not permanent. Learn to bear them patiently, Arjuna.
In simple words Interpretation
What you feel right now is real — and it is also passing. Like weather, it will change.
When this may help: When a feeling seems like it will last forever, or a hard season feels endless.
A question to sit with: What is one feeling you've carried before that eventually passed?
A simple practice
Write down what you are afraid will happen. Then write what is actually true right now, in this moment. Notice the difference.
