The Bhagavad Gita on purpose

The Gita begins with someone who no longer knows what he should do. Its teaching unfolds only after Arjuna honestly admits he is confused.

Its answer is not a single instruction but a way of thinking about one's own nature, responsibilities and choices.

How the Gita approaches this

The Gita introduces svadharma — one's own path — and suggests it is better walked imperfectly than another's walked perfectly. At the very end, Krishna asks Arjuna to reflect fully and then choose freely.

Verses to reflect on

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 2, Verse 7

kārpaṇya-doṣopahata-svabhāvaḥ
pṛcchāmi tvāṁ dharma-sammūḍha-cetāḥ
yac chreyaḥ syān niścitaṁ brūhi tan me
śiṣyas te 'haṁ śādhi māṁ tvāṁ prapannam

Translation

My nature is overcome by weakness, and my mind is confused about what is right. I ask you: tell me clearly what is best for me. I am your student; please guide me, for I come to you.

In simple words Interpretation

Even Arjuna — a great warrior — admitted he was confused and asked for help. Not knowing is where wisdom begins.

When this may help: When you're confused, stuck between choices, or feel ashamed of not having the answer.

A question to sit with: What would it feel like to say, without shame, "I don't know yet"?

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 3, Verse 35

śreyān sva-dharmo viguṇaḥ para-dharmāt sv-anuṣṭhitāt
sva-dharme nidhanaṁ śreyaḥ para-dharmo bhayāvahaḥ

Translation

It is better to follow your own path imperfectly than another's path perfectly. Better to stay true to your own nature; following another's path is full of fear.

In simple words Interpretation

Your own path, walked imperfectly, is worth more than someone else's path walked flawlessly.

When this may help: When you're comparing yourself to others, or living by expectations that don't feel like yours.

A question to sit with: Whose path have you been trying to walk instead of your own?

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 3, Verse 8

niyataṁ kuru karma tvaṁ karma jyāyo hy akarmaṇaḥ
śarīra-yātrāpi ca te na prasiddhyed akarmaṇaḥ

Translation

Do the work that is yours to do, for action is better than inaction. Even the simple maintenance of your body would not be possible without action.

In simple words Interpretation

When everything feels stuck, the next small action is often the way through.

When this may help: When you feel stuck, unmotivated, or frozen by too many options.

A question to sit with: What is the smallest next action you could take?

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 18, Verse 63

iti te jñānam ākhyātaṁ guhyād guhyataraṁ mayā
vimṛśyaitad aśeṣeṇa yathecchasi tathā kuru

Translation

Thus I have shared with you wisdom more secret than all secrets. Reflect on it fully, and then do as you choose.

In simple words Interpretation

After all his teaching, Krishna doesn't command — he asks Arjuna to reflect deeply and then choose freely.

When this may help: When you're facing a decision and want to honour your own reflection.

A question to sit with: If you took time to reflect fully, what do you think you would choose?

Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 2, Verse 50

buddhi-yukto jahātīha ubhe sukṛta-duṣkṛte
tasmād yogāya yujyasva yogaḥ karmasu kauśalam

Translation

One whose understanding is steady lets go of both good and bad outcomes here. Therefore, devote yourself to yoga — yoga is skill in action.

In simple words Interpretation

Yoga isn't only on a mat. It's doing ordinary things with care, attention and a light heart.

When this may help: When work feels meaningless or you want to bring more presence to everyday tasks.

A question to sit with: What ordinary task could you do with full attention today?

A simple practice

Write down one thing you do because you want to, and one you do because others expect it. Sit with what you notice.
